Google metric changes to favour mobile friendly websites

By April 22, 2015 No Comments

Google has been alerting companies to a change in the Google search metric for a couple of months whereby mobile friendly website will be favoured in organic search results. 21st April is when the new algorithm will apply and it is causing some clients to feel anxious.
Netgen has been aware of the pending changes to the Google metric and all new website developed by us over the past year are mobile responsive and on top of that Netgen is by and large able to rework existing websites SEO elements to make them mobile friendly according to Googles guidelines.
It is important to note that this change only applies to organic mobile searches, so when searching using your smartphone.  If you do not have a mobile friendly site, your ranking on desktop Google searches should not be affected. Google has warned on the mobile affects only but has not explained exactly what they will be doing at this stage. Google may not class ‘not being mobile friendly’ as a “penalty” but in mobile searches, mobile-friendly sites will rise up the ranks, meaning that non-friendly sites will by definition be placed lower.
Google filled in some additional details about the way this will work:

  • It is a page level penalty not a site level penalty. Only pages that are not mobile friendly will have trouble ranking in the mobile SERPs. Any parts of the site that are mobile friendly will be unaffected.
  • It is a real-time algorithm. If you change a page to be mobile-friendly, Google will pick up on it and stop penalizing it the next time it is crawled.

As more and more people use their phones and tablets to search online it does make sense to have a website that not only looks good on the smaller screen but is also easier to interact with. Netgen will keep our clients up-to-date with the changes and will adjust as we and the industry find out more.
Please contact Netgen to look at your site if you have any concerns and we can guide and assist you with the lautf8_general_ci changes. As Google releases more news on this big update we will then make adjustments to keep the sites ranked.
