Varsity College Careers Day: Connecting With the Next Generation of Developers
Netgen recently took part in a careers day hosted by Varsity College, joining other companies in speaking to students about careers in software development.
Events like this give us a chance to talk to students who are starting to think seriously about where a qualification in IT or computer science can take them. Our team spent the day answering questions about what day-to-day life as a software developer actually looks like, the kinds of technologies we work with, and how a custom software development company differs from working in-house or at a large product company.
What students wanted to know
A few of the topics that came up most often:
- What it’s really like moving from studying into a first developer role
- The technologies worth focusing on early – we shared our own experience working with .NET, C#, SQL, and JavaScript
- How Netgen’s own internship pathway works
- What tends to separate a good junior developer from a great one
It’s always a good day for us. We get to represent the industry to people who are still deciding on a path, and we come away with a clearer sense of what the next generation of developers is curious – and unsure – about as they look at the job market ahead of them.
