How much does custom software development cost in South Africa?

Netgen has been building custom software, mobile apps and web platforms for South African businesses since 2000. With 25+ years of experience, 200+ projects delivered and local teams in Johannesburg (Randburg) and Cape Town (Westlake), we’ve written this guide to help you budget realistically, compare quotes properly and avoid paying for features you don’t need yet.

Prices in this guide are indicative, in South African rand and excl. VAT. Last updated: October 2026.

What drives the cost of custom software?

No two systems are the same, which is why reputable developers rarely quote a single “per app” price. These are the factors that have the biggest effect on your budget:

1. Scope and number of features

The more screens, workflows and business rules your system needs, the more design, development and testing time it takes. A tool that captures and reports on one process costs far less than a platform that runs your whole operation.

2. Complexity of business logic

Simple data capture is quick to build. Calculations, approval workflows, pricing engines, scheduling and automated decision-making take longer to design and test properly.

3. Integrations with existing systems

Connecting to your ERP, accounting package, CRM, payment gateway or third-party APIs adds effort, particularly when those systems are older or poorly documented. Integration is often one of the most underestimated costs.

4. Platforms: web, iOS, Android or all three

A web application runs in the browser on any device. A mobile app needs to support iOS and Android. Cross-platform frameworks such as React Native and .NET MAUI let us build for both from a single codebase, which usually costs less than two separate native apps.

5. User roles, security and compliance

Multiple user types (admins, staff, clients, suppliers), granular permissions, audit trails and POPIA requirements all add to design and testing time. Systems handling financial, medical or personal data need extra security work.

6. Design and user experience

A clean, functional interface built on proven patterns costs less than a fully bespoke, branded design with custom animations. Both are valid; the right choice depends on who your users are.

7. Data migration and legacy systems

Moving data out of spreadsheets, Access databases or an ageing system, or modernising legacy code, takes careful planning so that critical business logic isn’t lost.

8. Hosting, maintenance and support

Software isn’t finished at launch. Cloud hosting (we typically use Microsoft Azure), security patching, monitoring, updates and new features are ongoing costs and should be part of your budget from day one.

9. Timeline

A fixed, aggressive deadline may need a larger team working in parallel, which can increase cost. A realistic timeline gives you more flexibility.

  • Extra pages: pages beyond your tier’s limit are R1,200 each (about 2 hours of work per page).
  • Delivery time: build days are hands-on development time. Elapsed delivery is typically 2 to 3 weeks from receipt of your deposit and final content (based on a Starter website).
  • Custom projects: larger sites or sites needing custom functionality start with Sprint 0, a short business analysis and scoping phase. Once it’s done, you receive a quote based on your actual requirements.
  • Prices are in South African rand and excl. VAT.

Pricing and engagement models

How a project is priced matters as much as the number on the quote. We’ll recommend the model that best fits your project and risk profile.

Fixed price

Best for: projects with a clear, well-defined scope. After discovery, you receive a fixed quote for an agreed set of features, with defined milestones and deliverables. You know your budget upfront. Change requests are assessed for their impact on timeline and budget, then agreed with you before any work begins, so there are no surprises.

Time and materials

Best for: evolving projects, innovation work, or where requirements are still being shaped. You pay for the actual time spent at an agreed hourly or daily rate (quoted on request), usually in agile sprints with regular demos. This gives you the flexibility to change priorities as you learn, while we keep you updated with regular progress reports.

Retainer and ongoing support

Best for: live systems that need maintenance, enhancements and dependable support. A monthly support agreement (quoted on request) covers an agreed allocation of hours and/or services such as hosting, monitoring, security patching, bug fixes and new features. Support requests are logged through our ticket system and handled according to agreed response times, giving you predictable costs and peace of mind.

How to reduce the cost of custom software (without cutting corners)

Start with a minimum viable product (MVP)

Identify the smallest set of features that delivers real value to your users and launch that first. An MVP gets you to market sooner, lets you test assumptions with real users and stops you spending money on features nobody uses.

Take a phased approach

Split the project into phases with their own budgets and goals. Phase one solves the most important problem; later phases add features based on actual feedback and business priorities. This spreads cost over time and lowers risk.

Invest in discovery upfront

Most budget overruns come from unclear requirements. A proper business analysis phase defines scope, priorities and success criteria before development starts, which is far cheaper than changing direction mid-build.

Choose cross-platform where it makes sense

Building iOS and Android apps from one React Native or .NET MAUI codebase reduces development and maintenance effort compared with two separate native apps.

Reuse and integrate rather than rebuild

Where a proven service already exists (payments, maps, messaging), integrating it is usually quicker and cheaper than building from scratch.

Own your code and avoid licence fees

With Netgen, the software we build becomes your intellectual property. There are no licence fees payable to Netgen, and you can host or migrate the system wherever you choose, which helps keep long-term costs under control.

Budget for maintenance from the start

Planning for hosting, updates and support upfront avoids expensive emergency fixes and keeps your system secure and stable.

Frequently asked questions

How much does custom software development cost in South Africa?

It depends on scope, complexity, integrations and support requirements. WordPress websites start from R6,500, mobile apps typically cost R120,000 – R400,000+, and custom software such as web applications and enterprise systems typically costs R150,000 – R600,000+ (all excl. VAT). Netgen scopes and prices most projects after a discovery phase so that you receive an accurate, itemised quote.

How much does it cost to develop an app in South Africa?

The cost of a mobile app depends on the number of features, whether it needs a back-end and admin portal, integrations with existing systems, and design requirements. Mobile apps typically cost from around R120,000 (excl. VAT) for a focused MVP up to R400,000+ for a full-featured app with a back-end and integrations. Building for iOS and Android from a single cross-platform codebase, using React Native or .NET MAUI, usually reduces cost compared with building two separate native apps.

How is web app pricing different from website pricing?

A website mainly presents information and generates enquiries, so it is usually quicker and cheaper to build. A web application is software that runs in the browser, with user logins, databases, workflows, dashboards and integrations, so it needs more design, development and testing, and costs more as a result.

Do you offer fixed-price quotes?

Yes. For projects with a clearly defined scope, Netgen provides a fixed-price quote after discovery, with agreed milestones and deliverables. For evolving projects, a time and materials model may be more suitable. Change requests are always assessed for their impact on timeline and budget and agreed before work begins.

How long does a custom software project take?

Scoping typically takes 2 to 6 weeks. Build duration depends on scope, with most Netgen projects running 3 to 12 months in iterative agile sprints with regular client demos. Smaller systems and websites can be completed in a few weeks.

What ongoing costs should I budget for after launch?

Plan for hosting, security updates, monitoring, backups, bug fixes and new features. Netgen offers ongoing maintenance and support agreements that give you predictable monthly costs, agreed response times and a ticket system for logging support requests.

Who owns the source code, and are there licence fees?

You do. Netgen builds your software as your intellectual property. There are no software licence fees payable to Netgen, and you keep full ownership of the source code and data, with the freedom to host or migrate the system anywhere.

Is custom software more cost-effective than off-the-shelf software?

Custom software usually costs more upfront, but it is built around your exact workflows, integrates with your existing systems and avoids ongoing per-user licence fees. Over time, it often reduces operational costs and can be more cost-effective than paying for several third-party tools that don’t work well together.
